| Obverse description | Within a beaded inner circle, a stylized lion passant to the right, rendered in a bold Romanesque manner with a prominent mane depicted as a series of raised pellets or curled locks, the body striated to suggest musculature, and the legs extended in a walking pose. A Latin legend, partially legible, surrounds the inner circle between it and the beaded outer border. The overall design is characteristic of the Brunswick ducal coinage issued under William of Winchester, with the Welf lion serving as the primary heraldic device. |
