Obverse description Half-length frontal effigy of Saint Maurice, the patron saint of Magdeburg, depicted within a beaded inner circle. The figure is shown in ecclesiastical or military garb with draped robes, holding a patriarchal cross-staff in the right hand and a palm branch in the left, both attributes of martyrdom and sanctity. The face is rendered in a stylized Romanesque manner characteristic of 12th-century German bracteate coinage. The legend SC - MAVRITIVS - DVX is distributed around the figure in the field. The thin, single-sided fabric typical of bracteate production gives the relief a distinctive pressed appearance.
