| Obverse description | Within a beaded circle, a lion passant to the left depicted within a shield, with the initials 'IL' (for Johann Ludwig, Count of Nassau-Idstein) placed above the shield. The legend and lettering cut through the beaded border in typical bracteate fashion. The design is characteristic of late 16th-century German hammered small coinage, with a somewhat crude but bold rendering of the Nassau lion. The flan is irregular and slightly clipped, as is common for issues of this type and period. |
