Obverse description A lion passant to the left is depicted in high relief at the center of the bracteate, set within a plain inner circle border. The lion's body is rendered with horizontal ribbing or hatching across the torso, conveying a stylized representation of fur. The head faces forward in a frontal position, with an open mouth and rounded ears. A curling tail rises above the haunches. The design is characteristic of the Welf dynastic heraldic lion, associated with Duke Henry the Lion of Brunswick-Luneburg.
