Obverse description Facing nimbed bust of Saint Stephen, the protomartyr, depicted in frontal view within a raised inner circle, rendered in the Romanesque hammered bracteate style. Flanking the bust are three pellets representing the stones of martyrdom, with an eight-pointed star visible in the field. A circular Latin legend reading + S - S STCPHANVS PROTOOMART runs along the outer border, separated from the central design by a beaded inner ring. The flan is characteristically thin and slightly irregular, as typical of 12th-century German bracteate coinage.
