Frederick II "Iron Tooth" ruled Brandenburg from 1440 until his abdication in 1470, spending much of his reign in bitter conflict with the Berlin-Cölln twin cities over municipal autonomy — a struggle he ultimately won by force in 1448, an event the Berliners later called the "Berlin Indignation." Bracteates of this type were produced in quantities sufficient for local exchange but are structurally fragile; the single-sided fabric, struck on foil-thin planchets, means even lightly circulated survivors show stress cracks along the die edges.
