| Obverse description | Central plain cross with four concentric double-ring annulets placed in each angle, all contained within a raised inner beaded circle. The cross arms terminate at the inner circle, creating a bold geometric composition typical of Rhenish-Westphalian ecclesiastical coinage of the late 12th century. A retrograde or irregular Latin legend encircles the design within the outer beaded border, reading +S/SSMO|X|NVDA, referencing the episcopal authority of the see of Hildesheim. The field is slightly convex consistent with the bracteate striking technique, and the coin presents a well-defined, if irregularly shaped, flan. |
