Obverse description Thin uniface bracteate struck by hammering, displaying a two-line Latin inscription divided across the field. The upper line reads 'GOS' (abbreviation for Goslar) and the lower line bears the date numeral, here '638' representing 1638. The lettering is rendered in a bold, somewhat crude Gothic style typical of small municipal issues of the early seventeenth century. The coin exhibits a characteristic lobed or toothed border around the circumference, a common feature of bracteate pfennigs from German city-states of this period.
