Obverse description Central shield bearing a key in pale, with the city initial 'W' displayed prominently above the shield. The last two digits of the date are divided on either side of the 'W', with the century digits implied by convention. The design is enclosed by a border of small dots arranged around the circumference of the flan. The overall style is characteristic of late 16th-century Germanic municipal bracteate coinage, with shallow single-sided striking on a thin hammered planchet.

Additional information

Worms had been minting its own bracteates intermittently since the medieval period, but by the late sixteenth century the form was an anachronism — most German cities had long abandoned single-sided fabric coinage in favor of thicker, double-sided pieces. This tiny issue persisted largely because the bracteate's negligible silver content suited fractional exchange in a city whose monetary weight still carried the memory of the 1521 Diet.
