Additional information

Boleslaus II consolidated ecclesiastical authority in Bohemia by founding the Prague bishopric in 973, a political act that gave the Přemyslid dynasty direct leverage over church appointments and, consequently, over the legitimacy of coinage issued in their name. These deniers circulated during a period when Bohemian silver output was beginning to draw serious attention from neighboring powers, including the Holy Roman Empire under Otto II and Otto III, both of whom had reasons to monitor — and occasionally contest — Bohemian monetary independence.

Cach's classification of this type reflects work done largely in the mid-twentieth century on die studies that remain the primary framework for attributing Přemyslid coinage of this reign.
