Additional information

Berengar I secured the Italian throne in 888 after the deposition of Charles the Fat, but his hold on it was immediately contested — Gui of Spoleto seized the kingship the following year and held it jointly until his death in 894, forcing Berengar into a secondary role for much of the 890s. This second coinage dates to the narrow window after Gui's son Lambert died in 898, when Berengar finally ruled without a rival claimant, before his own capture by the Magyar raiders at the Brenta in 899 effectively ended his political authority for years.
