Obverse description Central field bears a Carolingian-style papal monogram composed of interlaced letters forming the name BENEDICTVS, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. A pellet is visible in the lower portion of the monogram field. The surrounding legend, separated by a cross pattée, reads BENEDITV and SCS PETRVS, invoking the Pope and Saint Peter, and is contained between the beaded circle and the outer toothed border of the flan.
