| Reverse description | Central field displays a plain cross pattée within a plain inner circle, the arms extending to the circle's edge, a design derived from Carolingian regal coinage adapted for papal use. The outer legend, separated from the inner circle by a beaded border, reads ROMA followed by a cross and SCS PAVLVS, identifying the mint city of Rome and invoking the authority of Saint Paul. The coin exhibits the characteristic rough, irregular flan and variable die alignment of hand-struck early medieval silver. The lettering is in angular Latin capitals, consistent with the epigraphic style of the Roman papal mint circa 900–901. |
