Benedict III's pontificate opened in chaos: his election in 855 was immediately contested by the imperial faction, which installed the antipope Anastasius Bibliothecarius by force before Benedict was ultimately confirmed. The joint coinage with Louis II reflects the uneasy accommodation that followed, with papal and Carolingian authority formally paired on a single issue — a political arrangement as much as a monetary one. Benedict died in 858, leaving this a short window of production.
