Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, a small Greek cross with a pellet in each angle occupies the central field. The surrounding legend, rendered in Latin characters, reads · BELA REX + (King Béla), distributed around the circumference of the coin. The flan is irregularly shaped, as typical of hammered medieval Hungarian deniers of this period. The overall design reflects the Romanesque artistic conventions prevalent at the Hungarian royal court during the late 12th century.
