Obverse description Central plain cross with a pellet in each of the four angles, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The legend surrounds the beaded circle in the outer field, rendered in archaic Carolingian letterforms with lambda-shaped characters in place of conventional 'A'. The overall design is characteristic of late Carolingian regal coinage, struck on an irregular flan with visible surface unevenness typical of hand-hammered production.
