Obverse description Central field features a facing bust of Saint Mayeul (Maiolus), rendered in archaic Romanesque style with a schematic facial treatment and stylized drapery flanking the neck. A plain cross with splayed arms divides the upper portion of the design, with a small rosette or mullet visible in the upper cantons. Two shell or crescent devices flank the bust in the lower field. The circumferential Latin legend SCS MAIOLVS, identifying the patron saint of Cluny and Souvigny, runs within a beaded inner circle.
