Reverse description A plain cross with slightly splayed arms occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The circumferential legend S GERTRVDIS VIRGO, invoking Saint Gertrude the Virgin — the founding abbess and patron saint of Nivelles — runs along the outer periphery. Pellets or small ornaments appear in the angles formed by the cross arms within the inner circle. The overall design reflects the standard Ottonian-influenced ecclesiastical denier type widely produced in the Low Countries during the mid-11th century, with the beaded border and cross motif serving as hallmarks of abbatial monetary authority.
