Obverse description Central field occupied by the papal monogram of Adrian II, composed of interlaced letters forming a cruciform design enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is rendered in bold relief in the Carolingian tradition, with the letters of the name ADRIAN woven into the design. A Latin circular legend runs between the beaded circle and the outer rim of the flan, invoking the name of Saint Peter as the spiritual authority of the Roman See. The flan is irregular and slightly scyphate in profile, consistent with hand-hammered production of the period.
