| Reverse description | A bold Cyrillic inscription arranged across the field in multiple lines, forming the legend of Great Novgorod. The text is divided by a cross or row of pellets running horizontally across the centre of the flan, a hallmark compositional device of Novgorodian denga coinage. Individual letters are large and somewhat angular, reflecting the hammered die-cutting style of the Novgorod mint. The irregular flan causes portions of the legend to fall off the coin's edge. The overall layout reads as a proclamation of civic authority: 'of the Great Novgorod'. |
