Additional information

Mikhail Romanov's accession in 1613 ended the Time of Troubles — a decade of dynastic collapse, famine, Polish occupation of Moscow, and at least two rival claimants to the throne. The wire coinage he inherited was essentially unchanged from Ivan the Terrible's monetary reform of 1534, and his mint continued that tradition without interruption. These tiny hammered pieces were produced by drawing silver rod into wire, cutting segments, and striking each blank individually between hand-cut dies.

Die marriages for this type are numerous and poorly systematized. GKH2 lists meaningful distinctions between obverse die groups that affect collector valuation considerably.
