| Obverse description | Within a beaded inner circle, four letters — Ω, E, P, and S — arranged in the form of a cross with a central globule at their intersection, evoking an abbreviated episcopal or civic inscription. The concave (scodellato) fabric gives the design a characteristic bowl-like relief. The surrounding legend reads VIRGILIVS, invoking the patron saint of Mantua, Virgil, separated by a cross pommée at the beginning. |
