Additional information

The Italian Republic was Napoleon's rebranding of the Cisalpine Republic in 1802, with himself installed as President — a title chosen specifically to echo the Roman republic rather than betray monarchical ambitions he hadn't yet declared openly. This copper piece dates to that brief constitutional fiction, which lasted only until 1805 when Napoleon dissolved the republic and crowned himself King of Italy in Milan Cathedral. The KM#Pn1 designation places it among pattern issues, meaning it was struck for approval rather than general release — likely never reaching circulation at all.
