Obverse description Central field divided by an inner beaded circle, within which the emperor's name OTTO is arranged in two lines with a pellet in the centre, rendered in large, bold, archaic Carolingian letterforms characteristic of medieval Italian hammered coinage. The outer legend, reading around the periphery, carries the remainder of the imperial name and title. The overall design is typical of the Pavese denaro mezzano type, with letters occupying the entire field in a manner consistent with tenth- and early eleventh-century Lombard monetary practice.
