Reverse description The reverse displays the letters P, A, A, P arranged in the form of a cross within a beaded inner circle, with a central pellet at the intersection, forming the abbreviated papal title PAAP (Papa). The arrangement creates a quartered cruciform design occupying the central field. The surrounding legend, separated by pellet stops and introduced by a cross pattée, gives the name GREGORIVS, identifying the issuing pope, Gregory XI. The lettering is rendered in a bold Gothic style consistent with the hammered billon coinage of the Papal States at Bologna during the fourteenth century.
