Obverse description Bare-necked, laureate bust of Emperor Vitellius facing right, with a small globe depicted at the base of the neck truncation, a distinctive iconographic element asserting universal dominion. The portrait renders Vitellius with characteristic fleshy features and layered laurel wreath. The encircling legend in Latin reads A VITELLIVS IMP GERMAN, distributed around the obverse field. The engraving style reflects the hurried but competent die-cutting characteristic of the brief and turbulent Year of the Four Emperors.

Additional information

Vitellius struck this issue during 69 AD — the Year of the Four Emperors — when his claim to power rested entirely on the Rhine legions who had proclaimed him in January of that year. The CONSENSVS EXERCITVM legend was not decorative; it was a direct political statement addressed to rival armies still loyal to Otho, and later Vespasian, advertising military consensus he was actively trying to manufacture.

He was dead by December. Coins bearing this legend had a circulation window measured in months.
