Obverse description Laureate head of Vespasian facing right, with short beard and strong, naturalistic portraiture characteristic of early Flavian coinage. The emperor's mature features — including a prominent brow and thick neck — are rendered in high relief. The surrounding legend reads VESPASIANVS CAESAR AVGVS, distributed around the periphery of the flan. The overall style reflects the vigorous workshop production of the Rome Mint during the opening years of Vespasian's reign.
