| Obverse description | Laureate head of Emperor Vespasian facing right, rendered in a robust, naturalistic style characteristic of Flavian portraiture, with strong facial features, a pronounced brow, and short hair beneath the laurel wreath. The laureate wreath is tied with a ribbon whose ends fall behind the neck. The legend IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG is distributed around the periphery of the flan, reading clockwise from the lower right. The flan is slightly irregular, as is typical of hammered Roman denarii of this period. |
