The OPTIMO PRINCIPI title — "best ruler" — was formally voted to Trajan by the Senate in 114 AD, though it appears on coinage well before that date, suggesting the honorific was in informal use and politically promoted earlier. Its inclusion here places this issue within a deliberate propaganda campaign tied to the Dacian Wars, the two major campaigns of 101–102 and 105–106 that ended with Decebalus's suicide and the annexation of Dacia as a Roman province.
RIC II 162 is a well-documented type with no exceptional rarity, but the date range overlaps directly with the construction of Trajan's Column, dedicated 113 AD to commemorate the same campaigns.
