The figure is rendered in flowing drapery with wings furled behind, in a pose of triumphant repose. The reverse legend P M TR P COS IIII P P encircles the field, running along the upper and lower margins. The composition commemorates Trajan's Dacian campaigns and his fourth consulate, with the trophy or cuirass beneath Victory reinforcing the martial theme. The style is consistent with the Rome Mint's accomplished die-cutting of the early second century AD. |

Trajan's fourth consulship, which this issue dates to, coincided almost exactly with the opening of the First Dacian War in 101 AD. The campaign against Decebalus would ultimately yield two wars, a triumph, and enough plundered gold and silver to fund one of Rome's most ambitious building programs — including the forum that bears Trajan's name.
