Trajan struck this issue within months of his accession, celebrating the German frontier command he had held under Nerva before being named heir. The "Germania" reverse type directly references his earlier role overseeing Rhine legions — it was political currency as much as metal, positioning the new emperor as a soldier-emperor before he had launched a single formal campaign of his own.

RIC II 5 is among the earliest issues of the reign, dated by the COS II iteration of his titulature to 98-99 AD.
