Obverse description Laureate bust of Emperor Trajan facing right, with drapery over the left shoulder, rendered in the robust, naturalistic portraiture characteristic of the Trajanic period. The effigy presents the emperor with strong facial features, a prominent brow, and the civic laurel wreath denoting his imperial dignity. The obverse legend, incuse in Latin capitals, encircles the bust continuously within the field. The flan is slightly irregular in outline, consistent with hand-struck hammered coinage of the early second century AD. The overall die work reflects the high-quality engraving associated with the Rome mint under Trajan.
