Obverse description Diademed and draped bust of Ptolemy of Mauretania facing right, wearing an elaborate headdress adorned with a wreath or floral ornament; the hair is rendered in fine wavy strands falling to the neck. The legend REX PTOLEMAEVS is partially visible around the periphery of the flan in Latin characters. The portrait reflects a Hellenistic artistic tradition blended with Roman provincial numismatic style, conveying regal authority. The field is relatively flat and the flan irregular, consistent with hammered silver coinage of the period.
