Ptolemy of Mauretania struck this coin during the early years of his reign, having inherited the kingdom from his father Juba II — himself a Romanized client king who had been raised in Rome after Caesar's African triumph. The name Caesarea on this issue refers to the capital Juba II refounded and renamed in honor of Augustus, modern Cherchell in Algeria. Ptolemy would rule for over four decades before Caligula, reportedly envious of the reception Ptolemy received in Rome, ordered his execution in 40 AD — ending the Ptolemaic line's last ruling dynasty.
