| Obverse description | Laureate head of the usurper Pescennius Niger facing right, rendered in the provincial Syrian workshop style characteristic of the civil war coinage of 193–194 AD. The portrait displays a mature, bearded effigy with a laurel wreath, the workmanship somewhat coarser than contemporary Roman mint issues, reflecting the improvised nature of this emergency coinage. The encircling legend is distributed around the periphery of the flan, partially weak due to the irregular planchet. The portrait treatment follows Antonine iconographic conventions while exhibiting the distinctive hand of eastern die-cutters. |
