Reverse description Standing frontal figure of Ceres, the goddess of grain and agriculture, depicted in long robes with her head turned slightly to the right. She holds a grain torch or ears of wheat in her raised right hand and a cornucopia or long torch in her left arm, attributes emblematic of abundance and fertility. The goddess stands on a ground line within a plain field, rendered in the restrained classical style characteristic of Julio-Claudian and early Year of the Four Emperors coinage. The abbreviated Latin legend CERES AVG appears to either side of the standing figure, invoking the goddess in her imperial aspect. The reverse flan edges are irregular, reflecting the hammered production technique of the Rome Mint.
