| Reverse description | Jupiter seated left on a low throne, his body draped, holding a thunderbolt in his extended right hand and a long sceptre in his left. The god's commanding seated pose and divine attributes emphasize his role as protector of the imperial house. A small eagle, Jupiter's sacred bird, may be suggested at the foot of the throne. The legend IVPPITER CVSTOS is distributed around the periphery, identifying the deity as guardian of Nero and the Roman state. The composition is rendered in the clean, classicizing style typical of Neronian silver coinage from the Rome Mint. |
