Reverse description The emperor Hadrian stands facing left in military attire, extending his right hand to raise the kneeling, draped personification of Achaea, who reaches upward in a gesture of supplication and gratitude. Hadrian holds a scroll or rotulus in his left hand, symbolising the benefactions and privileges he granted to the province. Between the two figures stands a vase or cista from which a palm branch rises, alluding to the Greek cultural heritage and the imperial favour bestowed upon the region. The reverse legend arching above identifies the type as a commemorative issue celebrating Hadrian's celebrated tour of Greece and his role as benefactor and restorer of the province.
