Reverse description Hadrian seated left upon a raised tribunal platform, writing at a desk with a stylus or pen; behind him stands a figure of Liberalitas facing front, holding a coin scoop (tessera). In the foreground, a citizen ascends the steps of the platform with the fold of his toga extended to receive the imperial largesse, while an attendant figure stands or mounts the rear steps of the platform behind Hadrian. The scene commemorates the third congiarium, or imperial distribution, of Hadrian's reign, rendered with characteristic narrative detail. The reverse legend frames the composition.
