| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of Hadrian facing right, rendered in high relief with characteristic beard and strongly modelled facial features. The emperor is portrayed with the paludamentum visible at the shoulder, reflecting his role as commander and ruler. The encircling Latin legend reads IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG, arranged around the full circumference of the flan. The portrait typology is consistent with the earliest issues of Hadrian's reign, struck shortly after his accession in 117 AD. The flan is somewhat irregular and shows typical characteristics of early second-century Roman hammered silver coinage. |
