Issued in the final years of Hadrian's reign, this denarius belongs to a substantial series emphasizing the security of the grain supply — a pointed political message given that Hadrian had invested heavily in provincial infrastructure and trade networks throughout his twenty-one years of rule. The ANNONA AVG type was a deliberate reassurance to the Roman populace that the state could feed them, a concern never far from any emperor's calculations.
Hadrian died in July 138, making 137–138 issues among the last struck in his name before Antoninus Pius assumed power and immediately issued a posthumous consecration series.
