The ADVENTVS AVGVSTI ("arrival of the emperor") coinage was issued to commemorate Hadrian's extensive provincial tours — among the most ambitious undertaken by any Roman emperor. Between roughly 121 and 132 AD, he visited nearly every province in the empire, inspecting troops, founding cities, and adjudicating local disputes. Specific ADVENTVS types were struck for individual provinces; the Roma type marks his return to the capital rather than a departure, distinguishing it from the provincial series.
RIC II.3 #1978 belongs to the final reorganized sequence published in the 2023 revision of RIC volume II, which substantially renumbered Hadrianic issues.
