Additional information

IMP XXII dates this coin to 92 AD, the year Domitian launched his campaign against the Sarmatians and Suebi along the Danube frontier — a conflict he celebrated with a triumph despite senatorial skepticism about its legitimacy. The COS XVI marks his sixteenth consulship, held continuously from 82 AD onward, a concentration of office that contemporaries read as a deliberate affront to Republican tradition.

Domitian's assassination in 96 AD triggered a damnatio memoriae, and many coins bearing his portrait were deliberately defaced or melted. Clean survivors of this late titulature are accordingly harder to source than mintage alone would suggest.
