Domitian's censorship title — CENS P P P, Censor Perpetuus — appears on coins of this period as a direct assertion of his authority to regulate public morals, Senate membership, and Roman civic life indefinitely. He assumed the censorship permanently in 85 AD, an office previously held only for fixed terms, and the titulature on this issue reflects that consolidation. The IMP XVII acclamation dates the piece narrowly to 88–89, during the suppression of the Saturninus revolt on the Rhine, which Domitian personally traveled to address before the rebellion collapsed almost immediately upon his arrival.
