Reverse description Minerva, goddess of wisdom and warfare and Domitian's divine patroness, stands facing left in a dynamic martial pose, clad in a long draped chiton and aegis, her right arm raised and extended as if brandishing a thunderbolt or javelin, her left arm lowered and holding a long vertical spear. The figure is rendered in bold relief against a plain field. A beaded border frames the design, and the encircling Latin legend is divided to either side of the standing deity, reading continuously around the periphery.

Additional information

Domitian's censorship title — CENS P P P, Censor Perpetuus — appears on this issue as a deliberate assertion of moral authority over the Roman state, a power he assumed permanently in 85 AD rather than holding it for the traditional term. No emperor before him had claimed the censorship in perpetuity, and the Senate's discomfort with it was considerable. After his assassination in 96, the censorship was never again claimed by a Roman emperor.
