Obverse description Bare head of Emperor Claudius facing right, rendered in a naturalistic portrait style typical of early Imperial Roman coinage. The emperor's features are individualized, with close-cropped hair rendered in fine, layered striations. The bust is draped, with the paludamentum visible at the shoulder truncation. The encircling Latin legend runs clockwise around the periphery of the flan, separating the portrait from the irregular hammered edge. The overall execution reflects the competent but somewhat provincial die-cutting style of the Rome mint under Claudius.
