| Obverse description | Bare head of Augustus facing right, rendered in fine portraiture style characteristic of early Augustan coinage. The hair is depicted in carefully arranged, wavy locks falling across the forehead in the classicising manner associated with the emperor's idealised image. The neck is cleanly truncated. The abbreviated legend IMP CAESAR AVGVSTVS runs around the periphery of the field, identifying the portrait as the supreme commander and Caesar Augustus. The flan is slightly irregular in shape, as is typical of hammered silver issues of this period. |
