Reverse description A tetrastyle, round-domed temple depicted in perspective, its columns framing a central figure of Mars, helmeted and cloaked, standing left within the shrine. The god holds an aquila (legionary eagle standard) in his right hand and a parazonium (short sword) in his left, referencing the recovery of the Roman standards from the Parthians. The abbreviated legend MART VLT, for Marti Ultori (To Mars the Avenger), appears in the field, alluding to Augustus's vow to build the Temple of Mars Ultor in Rome. The reverse composition commemorates one of the defining political and religious acts of the Augustan age.
