Reverse description A tetrastyle circular domed temple shown in elevation, its columns framing the standing figure of Mars facing left with head turned right. The god is depicted helmeted and cloaked, holding an aquila (legionary eagle standard) in his right hand and a parazonium (short sword) in his left. The abbreviated legend MAR VLT appears in the field, identifying the deity as Mars Ultor, Mars the Avenger, whose temple Augustus vowed at the Battle of Philippi and dedicated in the Forum of Augustus in 2 BC.
