Struck to commemorate the Ludi Saeculares of 17 BC — the Secular Games held under Augustus after a gap of over a century — this denarius names L. Mescinius Rufus as one of the tresviri monetales responsible for its production. The games themselves, organized by the quindecimviri sacris faciundis (the priestly college referenced in the obverse legend's abbreviation), lasted three days and nights of continuous sacrifice and theatrical performance, deliberately framing Augustus's reign as the dawn of a new age.
The coin dates to 16 BC, a year after the games, suggesting continued commemorative output rather than an issue tied to the event itself.
